Open Day 2022

It is that time again! Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten will be holding an open day for all prospective families and members of our community on May 21st 2022 from 10.30am -12.30pm

Come along with your family and tour our facilities, meet our wonderful educators and see what the children have been up to so far this year.

This will also be a great opportunity to learn more about the Canterbury Norwood 3 and 4 year old kindergarten programs and our exciting premises that will soon be due for completion!

About Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten

Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten (CNK) offers a welcoming, nurturing environment in which each child is supported and challenged to ‘belong, grow and blossom’.

Our experienced, passionate teachers and co-educators strive to provide a magical year for each child; allowing them to develop and enhance their social, emotional, physical and intellectual self-confidence. Our stimulating ‘play-based’ program is open-ended, flexible and responsive to the children’s interests and individual levels of development.

Our varied program includes music time, incursions & excursions, gardening, an end of year concert and many more exciting experiences. Children’s learning is enriched by our creative use of well-resourced indoor and outdoor spaces that maximises opportunities for both structured and unstructured play.

A strong sense of community is experienced by our families; with many opportunities for participation both within and outside program hours. CNK is operated by a volunteer parent based committee of management and has a strong social and fundraising sub-committee; continued parent involvement is strongly encouraged and welcomed to ensure we continue to achieve the best outcomes for our children.

Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten has a long standing association with the Baptist Church to which we share some facilities. We are a non-denominational kindergarten and welcome all cultures and religions.

New Premises in 2023

New premises are being built adjacent to Canterbury Gardens ready for 2023. The new building will co-locate Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten alongside Maternal Child Health Services, Toy Library, Playstation Occasional Care and more community services. Boroondara Council is investing $11.7 million into the project to deliver modern, purpose built facilities for our combined community groups.

The new premises will enable families easier drop off and pickup with dedicated car parking and close proximity to Canterbury Train Station. The new entrance foyer will also include tea and coffee facilities and lead to a space where children can begin pre playing at the start of the day.

When designing and setting up the new space, our director Karen is dedicated to ensure that the same warm, welcoming, nurturing environment that parents & families already know and cherish about Canterbury Norwood continues into the new space. Karen, along with teachers and the CNK parent-led committee are working closely with Boroondara Council to ensure the space reflects our existing values and kindergarten ethos and that our vision for a safe, nurturing, play based learning experience for children is carried forward into the new premises

Karen Szabo: Kindergarten Teacher and Director.

Karen has worked at Canterbury Norwood Kindergarten for over 20 years and is the mother of 4 children. She is passionate about the early years, not just as a precursor for school but for the development of confidence, individuality and the skills appropriate for the age level.

Karen plays the piano and the children enjoy a rich and varied music program that involves songs, instruments and dance.

Lily Li: Education Assistant 4 Year-old group

Lily brings a warmth and positive energy to the Kindergarten. She is the mother of two teenage boys and has been working in early childhood education for over 10 years. Lily’s native language is Mandarin Chinese and she also speaks Japanese.

Lily is an amazing oral storyteller and loves to encourage the children to use their imaginations in developing their own stories.

Lee Mohtaji: Lunchtime and Relieving Assistant

Lee brings a vibrancy and liveliness to the Kindergarten.  Her many talents include master balloon animal shaper, acrobat extraordinaire and sometime magician.  She is fluent in Mandarin and loves bringing joy to the children.

Seenal Sutariya: Education Assistant 3 Year-old group

We are excited to welcome Seenal to the Canterbury Norwood family in 2022 working with the Caterpillar group. Seenal has been working in Children’s services for almost 9 years and currently studying a Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood.

Her favourite activities to do with children are music and movement, playing group games and art and craft experiences. She loves surrounded by children because of their imagination, innocence, enthusiasm and curiosity. In her spare time Seenal like to explore new places, going for bushwalking and spending time with her family.
